The Yale Science Building opened on October 29, 2019. Designed by Stantec (Hamden, CT) and Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (New Haven, CT), the state-of-the-art facilities is home to approximately 550 faculty, staff and students from MCDB and other science departments at Yale.

The seven-story building is equipped with cutting-edge technology to accomodate a wide breadth of scientific research. It was also built with sustainability in mind; the target energy-use of YSB is 50% lower than the average for a Yale laboratory.

Temporary Freezers at YSB

MCDB 4th Floor freezers are available for emergency usage.

Please email the MCDB Business Office when placing items in and removing items from the freezer.

Your email to should include: 

  • Lab Name/Contact Person Name, Email and Cell Phone Number
  • Brief description of items placed in the freezer
    • What the material is
    • How much of it is in the freezer (#of vials, etc.)
    • What shelf is it placed on?
  • Date items were placed in the freezer
  • Estimated length of time the items will be in the freezer

Remember to notify the MCDB Business Office (mcdb.businessoffice@yale.edu) when items have been removed from the freezer.

The MCDB Business Office will monitor freezer use via a Google Sheet.

Shared Research Room Courtesy Guidelines

To ensure a clean, safe, and respectful environment for everyone, please follow these guidelines when using the shared research space, autoclave, and dishwasher.

General Room Courtesy

  • Keep the area clean: Wipe down surfaces after use and clean up any spills immediately.
  • Dispose of waste properly: Follow lab protocols for chemical, biohazard, and general waste disposal.
  • Remove any loose material: Look for broken glass, tape, caps, or spatulas at the bottom of the machine at the end of your run.

Autoclave Use

  • Do not overload the autoclave or stack items inappropriately.
  • Follow proper loading procedures: Ensure all items are autoclave-safe and packaged correctly.
  • Remove items promptly: Clean any spills that may occur as the result of a boil-over.
  • Report any issues to Carol Hwang at carol.hwang@yale.edu

Dishwasher Use

  • Load items properly: Do not block spray arms or overload the racks.
  • Unload promptly: Remove your items once the cycle is finished to free up space for others.
