iGEM Overview: The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a prestigious global event that challenges students to push the boundaries of synthetic biology. Teams design, build, and test genetically engineered systems using standard biological parts.

Yale’s Achievement: This year, the Yale iGEM team proudly secured a Silver Medal, showcasing their innovative project that stands at the intersection of biology, engineering, and technology. Despite a smaller team size, our results rivaled those of larger teams from leading universities, demonstrating our commitment to excellence and innovation.

MCDB’s Role: Critical to their success was the generous support from the MCDB department. The funding provided was instrumental in advancing their research, providing them with the necessary resources to compete at the highest level. They were also fortunate to receive unparalleled mentorship from esteemed MCDB faculty members, including Farren Isaacs, Maria Moreno, and Stephen Dellaporta, and graduate students such as Maisha Prome, Laura Quinto, Akira Nakamura, and Peter Ciaccia. Their guidance was invaluable in shaping the project and enhancing the learning experience.

The iGEM Team’s achievement is not just a testament to their team’s hard work but also reflects the collaborative and nurturing environment fostered by the MCDB department.
